Introducing Perspectives: Stories from New Zealand’s blind and low vision community.

Perspectives is a new podcast from the Blind Foundation, and we start the episode with getting to know our two hosts.

Mike Lloyd and Chantelle Griffiths are both Blind Foundation clients, as well as members of staff. Mike’s been working for the foundation for 14 years, helping people learn how to use adaptive technology. Chantelle has also worked in adaptive tech, but recently took on a new challenge, becoming the Braille Awareness coordinator.

For this first episode, the Perspectives team headed off for a night at the theatre, seeing the audio-described performance of ‘Matilda: The Musical’ at the Civic in Auckland. Chantelle talks about the challenges of navigating a busy theatre.

We also talk about what goes into an audio-described performance with Nicola Owen a professional audio-describer from Audio Described Aotearoa, who worked on the audio description for ‘Matilda’. Nicola also let us have a sneaky snippet of the audio description of another production.

The audio-described performance of Matilda at the Civic, presented by Auckland Live, was the first performance of Matilda to include a touch tour- you can hear Chantelle, Rachel and Ellen from the Perspectives team talk about what they got out of this.

Got a story to share for a future episode? Then we want to hear from you! You can get in touch with us at perspectives.podcast@blindfoundation.org.nz.
