We have a new team member at Blind Foundation Guide Dogs – Lydia Charteris who will be our Guide Dog Colony Health Manager (previously known as Vet Care Advisor).

She’ll be responsible for the health and nutrition of the entire colony, developing health protocols, ensuring health data is accurate and maintain external relationships.

Lydia tells us a bit about her background and why she joined the team:

“I joined the Blind Foundation Guide Dog team at the beginning of April 2019 as the Guide Dog Colony Health Manager, a role that I have wanted dearly, since I was about 8 years old.

“I studied veterinary nursing and management at Plymouth University in the UK and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in London. Since then I have worked both in veterinary practice and for two global animal health corporates. My last post was managing an SPCA centre.

“I am originally from Dorset in the UK. Growing up, my Dad who is a medical doctor, would often get posted to NZ and in 2009, I packed my bags for the final time and made the move to NZ permanently. I am married to a local dairy vet and have two young children. We have two and a half dogs at home – a black Labrador, a Border Collie and a Chihuahua cross.

“When I’m not at work or studying towards a second Bachelor’s degree (Applied Science in Animal Welfare), I love walking my dogs, family time and the great outdoors.”
