Blind Foundation guide dog puppies need homes where they can learn to become the responsible companions they’re destined to be. You could become a Puppy Walker and provide a puppy with this home.

The Blind Foundation needs to place 120 puppies with families each year around New Zealand.  We mostly need homes around Auckland but sometimes in other areas too.

As a Puppy Walker, you’ll need to love and care for the puppy during the first 12 – 18 months of their life. You would help the pup develop the confidence needed for the future. Taking the puppy everywhere with you will help introduce them to the situations they’ll face as a guide dog.

After a year or so in your care, the puppy will return to the Blind Foundation Guide Dog centre for formal training and assessment.

You’ll have full support from our dedicated, experienced staff while the pup is in your care.

What you need to be a great Puppy Walker

Ideally, you should:

  • have enough spare time to socialise your puppy, so preferably not work full-time.
  • be capable of managing an energetic young dog.
  • ideally, have no more than one child under five.
  • have no more than one dog yourself.
  • have a fully fenced garden or yard to keep your puppy safe.
  • be able to drive and have your puppy travel with you in your car.

Guide dog puppies need to feel they are part of the family. This means sleeping inside. They need daily exercise to keep them fit and healthy plus adult company for much of the day.

As a Puppy Walker, you should take your trainee guide dog everywhere you go. This is a big part of each pup’s development. Guide dogs are allowed in most public places and on buses, trains and planes.

Food, registration and vet costs for puppies are covered.
