Bay of Plenty Blind Sports Club – Blind Sport Festival Weekend
Mark your diaries – you won’t want to miss out on the Bay of Plenty Sports Club annual Blind Sport Festival Weekend. The festival takes place from Saturday 15 to Sunday 16 October and involves a variety of sporting competitions to get involved in.
Blind Football (soccer)
Come along and have a go at this new sport in New Zealand.
Each team has four players (all wearing blind folds) plus one sighted or blind or low vision goalie per team. This is an indoor game played with an audible ball (has a bell inside).
When: Saturday 15 October, from 9am to 12pm.
Where: Mount Sports Centre on the corner of Maunganui Road and Hull Road, Mount Maunganui.
Blind Lawn Bowls Competition
As part of the Blind Sport Festival Weekend, there will also be a Blind Lawn Bowls Competition.
When: Saturday 15 October from 1pm to 5pm.
Where: Club Mount Maunganui, 45 Kawaka Street, Mount Maunganui.
Sight categories range from B1 – Totally Blind to B4 – less than 5% field of vision and bowlers have a director or coach to assist them with aiming the bowl.
For new-comers, there will directors available to help you on the day so come along and give it a go. This is running as a competition, so make sure you register your interest – you may even walk away with a prize.
Blind Cricket Tournament
The final part of the Blind Festival Weekend is a Blind Cricket Tournament.
When: Sunday 16 October from 9am.
Where: Bay Oval, Blake Park, Mount Maunganui (yes this is the same field the Black Caps play on when they are in town!)
The format of the day depends on the number of players attending and is likely to be a reduced over format of the T20 game.
Players are split into three categories, ranging from totally blind to 6/20 vision.
Equipment for the game includes an audible ball and metal wicket (so that players can hear when someone is bowled or run out).
Note: Only underarm bowls are permitted.
Blind Cricket is one of the more established sports in New Zealand with plenty of opportunities available, including international travel.
