Zoe Haughton, from Access Advisors, tells us her top five tips for improving digital communications with access in mind.

1. Use a capital letter to begin each word in a hashtag when posting on social media.

2. Use alternative text for images or graphics that describe the content of the picture.

For example: Man plays game on a tablet with headphones on.

3. Make sure links describe their purpose (not just “click here” or “read more”)

4. Have sufficient colour contrast for text against a background. There’s even a free colour contrast tool to check.

5. When designing an online form, all form elements should have clearly associated labels. For example, a field to fill in your first name should have a matching label in the HTML code.
