At Blind Low Vision NZ, we are incredibly grateful for our dedicated volunteers who play a crucial role in supporting our community and extending the reach of our services to people who are blind, deafblind, or have low vision. Our volunteers’ commitment is heartwarming and truly changes lives.

Today, on Microvolunteering Day, we’re not only celebrating their support but also inviting you to join us in our mission. Whether you have just a few minutes or a few hours, your help can make a significant impact.

Microvolunteering: Every Little Action Helps!

Microvolunteering offers a unique opportunity to contribute with small, manageable tasks that can be done at your convenience. These actions, though quick, can have a profound effect on enhancing accessibility and support for people with vision loss. Here are some ideas on how you can start making a difference today:

Move an e-Scooter out of the way

E-scooters left on foot paths are obstacles for people who are blind or have low vision. By moving them out of the path, you ensure safer navigation for everyone.

Use Accessibility Checker

Before you finalise any document in Microsoft Word, use the built-in Accessibility Checker to identify and fix any potential barriers. This simple check ensures your documents can be understood by people with visual impairments.

Add Alt Text to Your Social Media Posts

Make your social media more inclusive by adding alt text to your images. If you’re short on time, an image description in the caption is also a great alternative. This small step helps users with screen readers understand your content better.

Share and Spread the Word

Help us reach more people by sharing our social media posts, including links to important petitions. Your shares can significantly increase awareness and support for our cause.

Download and Share Our Etiquette Guide

This guide is an invaluable tool for improving interactions with people who are blind or have low vision. It offers practical advice, like how to introduce yourself or describe the position of others in a room, enhancing comfort and understanding in social settings.
